Commercial offices: 4/10 - how to incorporate sustainable and eco-friendly options into your workspace design

Hello and welcome to my Healthy Interior Design series of blogs for Commercial Offices.

In today’s blog, I’m focusing on Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Design—a crucial aspect of modern office interiors that impact well-being, productivity, and corporate responsibility.

SUSTAINABLE AND ECO-FRIENDLY DESIGN

Sustainability in office design is no longer just a trend—it’s a necessity. Businesses are increasingly looking to reduce their carbon footprint while creating healthier environments for employees. Thoughtful material choices, energy-efficient lighting, and responsible sourcing all contribute to a greener workspace.

I have long been an advocate of using sustainable materials at home - through upcycling, purchasing pre-loved items and investing in vintage and antique pieces. My latest purchase is a pre-loved sit-stand desk and ergonomic office chair for my own office (finally! 4+ years sitting on a hard kitchen chair has not been much fun).

The workspace should be no different. There are many companies now who specialise in second hand and refurbished office furniture. Buying new should be the last resort not the first.

Incorporating a sustainable ethos into your business values is a good place to start. This will then feed into your strategy and ultimately help shape the decisions you make when sourcing anything for your business. Just some of the areas worth considering are:

  • Sustainable Materials: Opt for recycled, reclaimed, or responsibly sourced wood, metal, and fabrics.

  • Energy Efficiency: LED lighting, motion-sensor systems, and natural light optimisation reduce energy consumption.

  • Biodegradable & Low-VOC Paints: Traditional paints release toxins into the air, while eco-friendly alternatives don’t pollute the indoor environment

  • Upcycling & Circular Design: Reusing and repurposing furniture reduces waste and adds character to a space.

  • Green Energy Solutions: Solar panels and smart HVAC systems contribute to long-term sustainability.

STORAGE & DECLUTTERING

Sustainability isn’t just about materials—it’s also about mindful consumption. Overcrowded spaces filled with unnecessary furniture and accessories create waste. Adopting a minimalist approach with multifunctional, durable furniture can make a big difference.

THE FUTURE OF SUSTAINABLE DESIGN IN WORKSPACES

As work environments continue to evolve, the focus on sustainability will grow stronger. Offices need to support both employee well-being and corporate responsibility.

By prioritising sustainable materials and energy-efficient solutions, businesses can create workspaces that are both functional and eco-friendly.
