Commercial offices: 3/10 - How to improve acoustics in the workspace

Hello and welcome to my Healthy Interior Design series of blogs for Commercial Offices.

In today’s blog, I’m focusing on Acoustics in the Workplace — a crucial aspect of modern office interiors that impact well-being and productivity.

FUNCTIONALITY

Sound plays a huge role in how we experience a space. A poorly designed office can be filled with distracting background noise, while an overly silent space can feel isolating. The key to great workplace acoustics is finding the right balance.

Consider your workspace: Do you struggle with constant noise from colleagues or outside traffic? Does sound echo in large open-plan areas? Effective acoustic solutions can transform a chaotic office into a calm, focused environment and can be particularly effective for people who identify as neurodiverse.

  • Acoustic Panels & Ceiling Baffles: Soft, absorbent materials help to reduce sound reflection, making conversations clearer and less disruptive.

  • Carpets & Soft Furnishings: Hard surfaces amplify noise, so adding acoustic flooring, acoustic tiles, carpets, rugs, upholstered seating, or curtains can soften the acoustics.

  • Zoned Layouts: Creating designated quiet areas and collaboration zones allows employees to choose the best environment for their work. There are also a huge number of pods on the market now - pods that accommodate team meetings to individual work stations.

  • Sound Masking Technology: White noise systems can help neutralise background chatter, making open offices feel less overwhelming.

STORAGE & DECLUTTERING

A well-structured workspace also contributes to better acoustics. Cluttered spaces can create chaotic energy and increases noise levels, while well-organised layouts help keep distractions and echos to a minimum. Storage walls, bookshelves, and strategic furniture placement can act as sound buffers, making the office both quieter and more visually appealing, as well as creating a feeling of harmony and flow.

THE FUTURE OF ACOUSTIC DESIGN IN WORKSPACES

As work environments continue to evolve, the focus on acoustics will grow stronger. Offices are no longer just about aesthetics; they need to support well-being, productivity, and environmental responsibility.

By prioritising smart acoustic solutions, businesses can create spaces that feel good, function well, and contribute to a healthier planet.
